The editors of the Encyclopedia of Contemporary Latin American and Caribbean Cultures have set as their goal to recognize and define cultural events, sites, and monuments of Latin America and the Caribbean while at the same time explaining how they contribute to the historical and social make-up of the region. The set is well laid out, which makes it easy for quick reference as well as browsing. The book begins with a brief introduction; a guide on how to use the volumes; and a forty-five-page thematic entry list, which is arranged by broad subject categories such as country name, the arts, and religions. The main entries begin with a list of the decades (e.g., 1920s, 1930s, 1940s) and then begin the alphabetic listings of terms. Entries range from one to two paragraphs in length to several pages. Words in bold typeface within entries indicate the word has its own entry elsewhere in the set. Many entries provide lists for further reading, although not as many as one might hope. All entries are signed by the author who contributed. A list of contributors can be found at the beginning of volume 1 along with their country of origin and sometimes university affiliation. The entries are well written, although some are a bit brief. The set concludes with a brief two-page bibliography and well-done index. This scholarly set will be useful in academic libraries. Public libraries with a large Latin American clientele may also want to consider its purchase.
